Salmon trolling on Lake Ontario comes down to a few simple choices: the right spoon size, a color that shows up at depth, and a spread that covers water. This guide covers the spoons we run for salmon and when each size shines.

This is based on my own personal knowledge from fishing out of Port Dover, testimony from King Crusher customers, and feedback from our pro staff. Your body of water may be different, so treat it as a starting point and adjust to what you see.

Magnum spoons (11.5 cm): the all-season salmon spoon

The Magnum is our all-season salmon spoon. The bigger profile matches the larger baitfish salmon feed on, so it can stay in your rotation from spring right through fall. Our Magnum spoons are made with glow, so they charge in the light and glow for added visibility down deep and after dark.

Medium spoons (9.5 cm): fall staging salmon

In the fall, salmon stage off the river mouths before their run. A Medium spoon is a great choice at that time of year, and the smaller profile can get bites from fish that have seen plenty of big spoons.

Picking a color

A good starting point is to carry a mix: a dark pattern with a bright accent, a natural baitfish look, and something loud for stained water and low light. The Area 51 (black with bright green dots on a glow white back) and the Stelco (pearl white to royal blue fade) are two popular places to start.

Browse all salmon trolling spoons, check out the Area 51 and Stelco, or read our spoon size guide.

Want a different action? Our magnum spoons with holes add water agitation that a solid spoon can't.
